Click to listen to Michael on KSCO’s “Raising Standards”(19:23)
I really can’t count how many times I’ve been on KSCO – Well, I could, but it would take awhile. It would require math. And you don’t want me doing math. If you have doubts, talk to my wife, who balances our checkbook because it’s just a whole new shade of ugly whenever I try to do it.
But I digress. A few times a year I’m on “Good Morning Monterey Bay” with Rosemary Chalmers. Rosie’s one of those “fans who’s become a friend”. Also a serious dog person. Lots of common ground. Last Saturday, however, I went on “Raising Standards” for the first time. It’s co-hosted by Michael Jacobi and Rachael Shelton – who also helps out with Rosie’s show and nicely pulled me into this gig, too.
Michael and I immediately hit it off when he realized that we BOTH sold jokes to Jay Leno way back when. Or as my bio says, “A long time ago. Back when Leno was funny”. Leno had many stringers who submitted freelance jokes. Pretty funny that two of us ended up in the same room on a Saturday afternoon. Michael and I both did standup in a previous life. We also both stopped pursuing it because we wanted to eat and make a living. But it was fun.
If you want to hear a bit more about my standup days and how the Leno thing came about, go way back to episode #3 of my “Songs and Stories” podcast. Skip ahead to the ten-minute mark.
I was on in the last half of Saturday’s “Raising Standards”, so there was only time to sing “Starlite Drive-In Saturday Night” and “Now It’s a Taqueria”. Michael Jacobi then suggested they do a live two-hour hootenany at the end of the summer, along with me and some of my VERY FAVORITE LOCAL PEOPLE. (Shh…I’m not telling. You’ll see.)
I threatened to come back with my banjo, and neither Michael nor Rachael flinched, so this will probably happen. Big thanks to the both of them. It was a blast. Looking forward to doing it again.
