Aside from the header photo on my website (see above), I’ve always tried to avoid the standard musician image of a “guitar player posing pensively”. It’s sort of been done to death. Fortunately, my good pal David Hays is always handy with a camera and lots of creative ideas. See his Elfland Photography website (which includes some fine work at the ghost town of Bodie) for just a few examples.
David has done the layout work for all of my CDs. And when the “New Best Friends” band came along a year or so back, I suggested, “Let’s have some fun with this”. We brainstormed a bit and came up with some not-so-obvious pop culture images to spoof, ending up with band photos that referenced “The Lost Boys,” “The Breakfast Club,”ACDC’s “Highway to Hell” album cover, and Bob Dylan’s video for “Subterranean Homesick Blues”. Some folks got it, and some didn’t, but they were fun to put together.
We’re doing another photo shoot at the end of the month. We’re sticking with 80s movie motifs for the next round. We have a few ideas, but we’re open to suggestions. Have an idea? Email it to me. If we use it, there’s a free CD – and bragging rights – in it for you. Thanks!
