Lots of people meet on the Internet. In the case of Canadian-born Dan Frechette and Monterey Bay native Laurel Thomsen, magic happened. Dan’s a monster songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Laurel’s a songwriter, composer, and classically trained violinist. A chance encounter with Laurel’s playing on a YouTube clip led to a query from Dan about a possible music collaboration. Cut to a few years later. They’re now married, living here locally – lucky for us – and are finishing their third record as a duo.
This new release, as you’ll discover in this episode, is their most-balanced collaboration, weighted equally by co-writes from Dan and Laurel and fan favorites. It’s in the final stages of an IndieGoGo campaign to help finance it. And you can help celebrate it at Dan and Laurel’s CD-release party at Don Quixote’s Music Hall on Wednesday, April 27th.
Dan, Laurel, and I have tons of friends in common, and we’ve crossed paths a few times, but this podcast was a great excuse to just sit, talk shop, and really explore our common ground. You’ll learn the details of how they met, the way-impressive catalog of Dan’s songwriting, and you’ll get a good sense of why this duo is so special. And of course, you’ll also get a sample of their playing, as they perform a number from the upcoming CD.
