We’ve been circling around a re-visit with Jamie and Kellen Coffis of The Coffis Brothers and The Mountain Men for literally years. They first dropped in by the podcast back in 2011 for episode #112. At the time their “And the Mountain Men” band was just forming, and they had just finished their self-titled first record. Recently, their good pal and former drummer Henry Chadwick was on this show (in episode #182) and talked them up. And late last year, local young favorite Jesse Daniel (episode #175) visited the podcast. They’re all part of the young cast of characters from a very talented pool up in the San Lorenzo Valley.
To prove that we could actually schedule another of these and stick to it, Jamie and Kellen and I recently caught up. We discussed what they’ve learned in the three or four albums since their debut. We talked about how the recording process itself is just the first part of making a record – there’s hundreds of hours of listening, possible re-recording takes, mastering, packaging, etc. It takes you one or two of these to sometimes figure that out. And we keep doing it. As Jamie says in this as he paraphrases John Prine, “Once you’ve done four of these, you’re a lifer”. They’d just finished recording their newest – untitled as of this interview – record, produced by Tim Bluhm of bay area favorites The Mother Hips.
We also got into a really fun discussion of why it’s SO important for a band to know how to end a song when playing live. It’s trickier than you might think. This interview concludes with a brand new song played live from Jamie and Kellen, featured on their upcoming record.
Their current CD, “Roll With It” is available at CD Baby and Amazon, and you can listen to the whole record on Spotify.
